Paul Monteau, Drum Teacher
Paul started playing the drum in his native island of Haiti. After falling in love with the sounds and rhythms of the drum he began teaching himself how to play the drum by watching and mimicking three of his peers that were at the time playing for dance classes in Haiti. Paul began to play the drum professionally only after he arrived in New York when Singer Myriam Dorisme took him under her wings. She invited Paul to come and play for her Haitian folkloric dance classes and rehearsals with a group called Zetwal. While drumming for her dancers, Ms. Dorisme taught Paul the details and techniques of playing the drum. By working with Ms. Dorisme and her young dancers, Paul was able to master what he had already begun to teach himself. He was then able to understand the relationship between dancers and drummers, thus allowing him to be someone who currently performs and drums live for a wide variety of dancers throughout New York in both, classes and performances. He very much enjoys teaching the kids of Danse Xpressions how to play the drum. Paul is able to be creative and express himself artistically with the young dancers and drummers at Danse Xpressions. |
